3rd Grade Standards
  • 9.1.3
    1. Students should know and use the following elements of music:
      • Duration (speeds or tempos)
      • Intensity (dynamics or volumes)
      • Pitch (high vs. low sounds)
      • Timbre (individual sounds of various instruments)
    2. Students should know and use the following principles of music:
      • Composition (writing music)
      • Form (structure of music)
      • Genre (type of music)
      • Harmony (accompanying sounds in a musical piece)
      • Rhythm (structured pulse of music)
      • Texture (various combinations of melodies and harmonies that comprise a piece of music)
    3. Students should know how to review and revise original musical works.
    4. Students should be able to know and demonstrate the ability to:
      • Sing
      • Play and instrument
      • Read and notate music
      • Compose and arrange
      • Improvise
    5. Students should recognize and use fundamental musical vocabulary.
    6. Students should understand the various styles of music. They should be able to demonstrate various styles using instruments.
    7. Students should demonstrate the ability to express emotions and relate an experience through music.
    8. Students should recognize and identify musical performances of others.
    9. Students should recognize the function of rehearsals and practice sessions.

  • 9.2.3
    1. Students should be able to know, identify and explain the historical, cultural and social context of individual musical works.
    2. Students should relate musical works chronologically to historical events.
    3. Students should know and identify works of each musical period of history and analyze each work from its historical and cultural perspective.
    4. Students should be exposed to musical works from various geographical regions of the world.
    5. Students should identify and explain differences in music from various historical periods and various cultures.
    6. Students should identify and analyze common themes and forms in musical works.

  • 9.3.3
    1. Students should know how to communicate an informed opinion on a musical work.
    2. Recognize that a musicians choice of instruments, tempos, dynamics and form communicate the artists philosophy.
